What If It’s All Been a Big, Fat Lie?
That’s the title of a landmark article in the New York Times questioning what
up to now has been the reigning orthodoxy in U.S. diet and nutrition. “Lowfat
weight-loss diets have proved . . . to be dismal failures,” writes Gary Taubes
in the July 7, 2002, article.1 As scientists from the U.S. Department of Agriculture
to the Harvard School of Public Health now realize, eliminating fat
from our diets does not reduce the rate of heart disease—but it has helped
increase the rate of obesity. Between 50 and 80 percent of the U.S. population
is overweight,2 in part because their diets are deficient in omega-3 and
omega-6 polyunsaturated fats that actually help your body metabolize fat.
But low-fat diets aren’t the only culprit in today’s skyrocketing obesity
statistics. If you are concerned about weight gain or weight retention, you
may be surprised to learn that the culprits may also include stress, lack of
sleep, and, very possibly, excess exercise.

Sports studies is an emerging academic discipline, reputed to be the fastest
growing subject area in the UK. The impetus for this growth appears to be market
driven. In part this is a consequence of the expansion of employment opportunities
in the sport and leisure fields. Gratton and Taylor (2000: 19) note that
employment in sport in the UK rose by 28 per cent between 1985 and 1995, and
that by the end of that period sport accounted for 1.61 per cent of the total UK
workforce. By 2003 the figure for sports-related employment had risen to 2 per
cent (or approximately 515,000 jobs). The leisure industry (much of which is
sporting or sports-related) is even larger, employing 13.5 per cent of UK workers
(Prospects.ac.uk).
But this growth in employment is itself partly a consequence of the increasing
cultural centrality of sport in Western cultures in recent years. Once a
peripheral or playful aspect of social life, sport is now centre stage. Almost a
third of the UK population tuned in to watch Portugal knock England out of the
2006 FIFA World Cup Finals. But sport is more properly a global phenomenon.
An incredible 1.5 billion television viewers worldwide are estimated to have
watched the tournament’s opening match and FIFA estimated that over 30 billion
people would watch some television coverage of the tournament.
This dictionary is another consequence of the growing recognition in recent
years of sport’s social significance. A number of the entries contained herein
describe this growth in more detail. Some bring these modern phenomena into
sharper relief by providing comparisons with the sports forms of previous eras
and some highlight the social issues that have arisen in conjunction with these
changes. Other entries look at the psychological techniques and the social policies
used to make sport ‘work’ more effectively for us as participants and citizens,
while others detail the methods by which researchers have attempted to
understand more about the social world of sport. And some entries introduce
the reader to the theoretical concepts that are being used to make sense of these
developments. Sports studies is an emerging discipline, and thus much of the
clarification, definition and consolidation that other subjects take for granted,
still needs to be achieved. This dictionary is intended as a tool to be used for this
end; an educational resource for all those interested in the study of the social
aspects of sport.

Preface

This is the book I always wanted to write: A serious strength
training manual for coaches who want to get the most out of their
athletes. My previous book, Functional Training for Sports, was
meant to be a more mainstream piece intended for athletes,
coaches and trainers. Although I believe that I succeeded with
Functional Training for Sports I wanted to write a book for those
serious strength and conditioning professionals that I consider my
peers. I will intentionally not go into great detail about areas that I
feel I covered well in the first book. I do, however, update areas
that I feel differently about now than I did 2 years ago when the
majority of my first book was written. Instead the focus of this book
is on how to put a program together. I hope that this book will be
the type of book I coveted in my early years. The Charlie Francis
Training System (now Training for Speed) and Bill Starr’s The
Strong Shall Survive hold those places in my mind. I believe that
those works formed the foundation of my thought process for 20
plus years. I hope you enjoy.

Dr. Michelle Golland: It was the sucker punch heard around the world. University of Oregon football player LeGarrette Blount hit Boise State player Byron Hout last week after their game.

With such examples in the news, how do we teach our kids to be better sports than Blount was?
Teaching our children good sportsmanship is key to their emotional connections with peers. Social and emotional skills are an essential part of navigating school, from preschool and beyond. Being a good sport is not just about never cheating or never trash-talking the other team; it is truly about self-esteem and learning from adversity. Even if your score is not the highest, you can still be a winner
  • Want to win but don't hate to lose: Teach your kids that it is healthy to desire to win, but that all athletes have to learn to lose too. Teach them to accept defeat with grace and dignity. It is great to win, and of course it feels good, but glow about your efforts, don't gloat.
  • Be your child's role model: Offer praise for your child and encourage all the other kids too, including the opponents. Never berate, tease, or demean any child athlete or referee in front of your child.


  • Check out your own agenda about sports: Your child's desire to play sports should come from them, not you. If you have some vision of being the coach but your kid doesn't really enjoy it, you may need to reconsider the activities your child really wants to experience.

Blount's a shit talker; Hout's a shit talker. It ain't classy, but it's a fact of football.

Players should know better than to talk shit before a game. They should also know not to talk shit to a guy after a bad loss. Everyone should know better than to punch someone over trash talk. And finally if you decide to talk shit to an angry athlete, don't be a pussy and try to turn away. You'd better be prepared to square up.

Blount's punishment is fair. I think Hout got what he deserved.

Obviously you've never played highschool or college football b4! There's shit talkin with every play on the sidelines & on the field clearly, but the refs cant catch all the little yo moma jokes & trash talk off the field & during a pile up on a tackle but when a payer scores a TD and clearly taunts the other team then he gets penalized or punished some how, true the game was over but still he taunted the guy "AND EVERYONE SEEN" so since no one's gonna punish him then POW! Lagarrette did Lmao!
 He deserved to get punched in the face he prob sayed something racist or something i dont think blount be suspended 4 the season he should've been suspended for 3 weeks
